
A bay window costs $2,500 to $7,000 installed, and only about half of that is the window. The rest is a header, a projecting floor structure, a small roof, flashing, insulation, interior trim, and exterior finish work. A bow window with four or five sashes typically runs $3,500 to $9,000.
If you have been pricing bay windows online and finding units at $1,800, that is a real number and it is also not the number you will pay. It is the box that arrives on the truck.

That is why two quotes for "a bay window" can differ by $3,000 and both be honest. They are describing different amounts of carpentry.
Bay versus bow
Bay: three units. A wide fixed center pane with two flanking sashes angled back to the wall, typically at 30 or 45 degrees. The 45-degree version projects further into the yard and gives you a deeper interior seat. Casement or double-hung flankers both work; casements seal better.
Bow: four or five equal-width units set in a gentle arc. Softer looking, wider across the wall, projects less. More sashes means more money, and more mullions in your view.
Practical rule: bay if you want a usable seat and a defined feature, bow if you want a wide sweep of glass and a softer exterior line. A 45-degree bay gives you a bench you will actually sit on. A bow gives you a nook that mostly holds plants.
The structure part, because this is where installs go wrong
Two engineering realities:
The opening needs a proper header. You are cutting a wide hole in a wall that may be carrying load from above. Sizing that header is not a judgment call, and on a load-bearing wall with a wide opening it may need engineering.
The projection has to be held up. A bay window with a seat, three glass units, and someone sitting in it is a real cantilevered load hanging outside the wall plane. Two accepted approaches: knee braces from below, which are visible outside, or support cables running from the head of the unit up into the framing above, which are hidden.
Cables are the common modern solution and they need to be anchored into actual structure — not into sheathing, not into a rim board that has been notched to death. A bay that has visibly sagged over the years is almost always a support failure, not a window failure, and the fix is considerably more expensive than doing it right the first time.
The roof is the thing that leaks
The window unit almost never fails. The little roof over the projection, and specifically the flashing where that roof meets the wall above, is what fails.
That intersection needs proper step flashing and kick-out flashing, and it needs to be integrated with the house's water-resistive barrier rather than caulked at the end. A caulk-only detail there will look fine for four years and then rot the sheathing behind the siding without ever showing a stain inside.
When you are looking at quotes, ask specifically how the roof-to-wall flashing is being done. The answer tells you what kind of contractor you are dealing with faster than anything else you can ask.
Cold seats and hot seats
The other common failure is thermal. The floor of the bay is a cantilevered platform with outside air underneath it and the roof cavity above it, and both get skipped.
Insulate the underside of the seat platform and the cavity above the head, and air-seal both. Otherwise you get a bay window that is freezing to sit in during winter, uncomfortably warm in summer, and prone to condensation on the seat board. That is a $200 material cost during construction and a genuinely annoying problem to fix afterward.
When you should not buy a bay window

If your only goal is more light, buy a large picture window or a picture flanked by two casements. You will get comparable glass area for roughly a third of the price, with none of the roof, structure, or thermal complications. A big fixed unit with an operable on each side is one of the best value windows in the business.
If the existing bay is leaking and you do not love it, framing the projection in and installing a flat window is a legitimate and cheaper answer than rebuilding it. Nobody will tell you this while quoting you a new bay.
If it is a second-story install with no interior seat use, the cost-to-benefit gets thin fast.
Buy the bay if you want the seat, if the room genuinely benefits from the added floor area, or if the exterior of the house wants that feature to look right. Those are good reasons and they are worth the money.
What to ask for on the quote
- Header size and whether the wall is load-bearing.
- Support method — cables or braces, and where they anchor.
- Roof detail and flashing method, specifically at the wall intersection.
- Insulation of the seat platform and head cavity.
- Who does the interior finish — some window installers leave you with bare drywall edges and a trim job to arrange yourself.
